December 1, 2014 - FINAL MONTH!!

Can you believe it?!  Our mission is nearly over!  The last couple of months have passed so quickly that time got away from me before I realized how long it has ben since I posted on the blog.  So here goes the catch-up.

For the past two Relief Society activity nights our Branch sisters have been sewing and tying lap quilts.  We have made 32 to be donated to a local rehabilitation home.  Laurel also had the pleasure of making a special one for Rachel, the young sister who was hospitalized
for so long.  The sisters wrote messages to her on the back.  It was a great project.

In October one of the Family Home Afternoon groups took a little trip to Brother Ken Miller's guitar building shop.  He also builds mandolins, violins, and ukuleles.  It was very interesting and a good fellowshipping opportunity with his nonmember wife.  She is so nice and gracious.  They performed together for us, as well.

We enjoyed a beautiful leaf ride with our friends, Tom and Emma Flinn, to what is called Dry Falls.  As the picture shows below, it is anything but!  The trail to the falls winds down the hillside and behind the falls.  It is a beautiful spot!  We had a great day out with these friends, who are also nonmembers, but who somehow want to hang with us.  We have come to know them pretty well working together at the Food Pantry and on the House Raising Volunteers committee.

Lynn was asked to name and bless the new baby of a less-active family.  It was a good omen that they desired this, even though they don't attend church or live its principles.  We were happy that they recognized that every child deserves the blessings of God.

Since our area did not receive the movie, "Meet the Mormons", we were allowed to view it in Zone Meeting through our President.  It was wonderful!  We hope you have had the chance to see it, too.  If not, watch for it to appear online or on DVD before long.  It warmed our hearts.

Laurel has at least two new projects to dive into when we get home.  She will be making a chair with a seat woven from men's ties and a tie skirt.  She has been haunting thrift shops for ties in the shades she wants.  It can be tough to find ties here, because nearly all men dress casually to xxxcasual.

We had fun on Halloween hanging out with all the missionaries of our District at Chelsie's apartment and then at our house.  (More about Chelsie in a minute.)  She lives right downtown in an upstairs apartment with her front door on the main sidewalk.  Trick-or-
treaters flooded the area going from store to store for treats.  One of us would sit at Chelsie's open door and hand out candy.  They emptied a big storage tub!!  We thought that was a lot of candy until we spoke with the mayor's wife.  They live on Duke Street where
THOUSANDS of kids go to trick-or-treat.  So many go there that the police block off the street for the night!

Asheville Stake Conference was held Nov. 1 and 2.  Elder Russell M. Nelson of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles visited and spoke, along with Elder Randy Bluth of the Seventy.  It
was so uplifting and restorative!  They stood for over an hour afterwards to greet every single person that wanted to shake their hands or get a hug.  Our recent converts were
thrilled!

Lynn is not quite released from the cardiologist's care, but rather must check in with one in Utah.  He is doing well, however, so we expect everything to be fine.

Rachel spent 10 weeks in the hospital, near death several times.  With three priesthood blessings, countless prayers, and endless faith, she was finally released and able to come home.  Her recovery is taking time, but she is a walking miracle.  We now are finally teaching her the review lessons required after baptism.  We are grateful the Lord spared her life and gave her another chance to change her life.  We love her!

Charlie has pretty much quit taking the lessons.  He likes to listen and learn, but he doesn't have any desire to change.  The Lord requires a change of heart if we are to truly come unto Him.  We hope at some point he will gain the desire to really listen and accept the gospel.

We have begun to re-teach Carolyn Crawford, Terry's wife.  He built the flower stand for the chapel awhile ago.  She apparently was taught some by a previous couple, but didn't choose to accept it.  She is a sweet person and loves her husband.  We hope to make progress this time.  He would be active if she would come to Church with him, and he would like to have an eternal marriage.  Here's hoping.

Lynn was asked to speak to the Blind Association again this year prior to Thanksgiving.  He
did a wonderful job, then we sang a few songs for them with the ukulele.   They loved it!
They even requested a couple of songs that he sang last year!

Laurel went down for several days with back trouble after serving in the Food Pantry.  It has taken quite awhile to get back to normal, but she is nearly there.  It sure makes us grateful for good health when we have a sick or pain bout.

We have enjoyed monthly trips to the Atlanta Temple with the Branch.  We hope to get one more in December before we leave.  It is a treasured time.

November 23 our Branch had a full-blown Thanksgiving dinner after Church.  Everyone helped with food and cleanup.  Fellowship was at its best, many came who hadn't been in a very long time.  It was terrific!

Monday, November 24, we had a rare Branch Family Home Evening in the form of a baptism.  Chelsie Ann Renae McRae was baptized by Elder Nathan Bean after investigating for over a year. She says she was "Bean-dipped!"  It was a rocking' event!!  "Power in the Blood" (Pentecostal style) was the opening song--can't call it a hymn.  Oh boy!!  Most different baptism any of us have ever attended!  However, the spirit throughout the service was powerful.  Chelsie is an exceptional woman of 25 with two degrees.  She is a marketing specialist.  She will help bring younger blood into the Branch.  We are so grateful for her testimony and faith.

The Elders, Lynn, and Brother Moore spent all day on Tuesday building a shelter for Buzz'
pet Emu, Carl.  It (no one knows what gender it is) was getting rather cold with temps down to 15F.  Hopefully, now it will be okay.  The next day they finished building a ramp for Marlene Bryan.  Service, service, service!  Good for the soul!

The Flinns invited us and the Elders to Thanksgiving dinner.  They are very gracious and considerate of our health code.  We enjoyed a lovely meal followed by a walk along the river.  Their home is right on the river's edge--Paradise Lane, aptly named.  They called us the next day to come help eat the turkey soup.  Yummy!

We are preparing for the Branch Christmas party on Dec. 13.  Lynn is the chairman.  He has written a lovely script of scripture, songs, pictures, and actors for the Nativity.  It will begin with a big dinner, then the Nativity, ending with a Nativity display in one room, Mr. Kruger's Christmas showing in another room, and Santa in yet another room.  Laurel is in charge of decorating and the extra room events.

With everything we still need to accomplish and the events that occur, our days are loooong
and yet FLYYYYY by!  It seems like only a week until we leave this beautiful place and our beloved friends.  We can hardly stand it!  We do look forward to reuniting with our family and friends at home, though.  Wish we could just zap back and forth at will.

"HE IS THE GIFT" on christmas.mormon.org is a beautiful new short video.  Please share the website with your friends and enjoy exploring it yourself.  Happy Christmas season!!

October 13, 2014 - Much Ado About ... Everything!

Autumn is truly here, but cold nights haven't descended upon us yet.  Colors are showing in the hills (mountains to N.C. folk), but we think the peak will come next week.  We are planning a drive then to take pictures.

Since our last post Laurel had a birthday.  We spent the day doing what we should (missionary work) with our Elders, then we went to a bbq rib dinner in the evening.  A relaxing movie on Netflix topped off the day.  Thanks to everyone who sent cards and wishes, made calls, or other.  It was a good day!

September 20 was a special day in the Murphy Branch.  Jeff Frady, who was baptized only one month before we got here, received his endowment in the Atlanta Temple and was sealed to his lovely wife, Cori.  Half the Branch made the trip to be with them.  It was a wonderful day filled with the Spirit and love of the Lord.  Jeff is a fine mountain man, whom we love dearly.  We feel certain he will lead the Branch one day.

That same weekend our mission friends, the Roners, spent a few days with us.  It was such fun to see them again, laugh, talk, eat, laugh, talk, eat.  They were in the mission office during their term of service.

We have been taking Bill Boyd, a special needs fellow, to quite a few events lately.  He gets very lonely during the week while his family works out-of-town.  Sometimes we take him to lunch, or to FHA, or to the store, etc.  He is a crack-up with his statements like, "Slow your roll, bro!"

Lynn has been learning how to be a good ward clerk.  He isn't called as one, but he is trying to help the Branch Clerk out.  The membership records really need some updating, so the Branch President authorized him to be a "temporary" clerk.  It's a big job, but he enjoys it.

Both of us get turns to teach classes in church, as well as trainings in District and Zone Meetings.  It is a good thing that we have a lot of experience in this, because you never
know if you will have a week or a few minutes to prepare.

After a small fender-bender several weeks ago, we finally got the car repaired.  It looked great, but NOT!!  Today as we were washing the car, the paint on the repaired bumper started washing off in giant pieces!  Back to the shop on Monday!!

General Conference was a boost for us!  We always look forward to hearing the inspiring messages of our leaders.  The Spirit bears witness to us of the truth of the gospel, which we all need in these troubled times.  Amid controversy about so many vital issues in the world, it is even more necessary that we are founded in obedience to  God's word.  It may not be convenient or popular, but knowing that it is what He wants from us will carry us through.

Laurel had a heyday doing some shopping at the Fall Folk School Festival, acquiring some items she wants to take home with us.  Some are small, some not so small.  :)  Add to that the Amish rocking chair she wants, and we'll be towing a U-Haul trailer home!

She has missed her creative outlets, so when the R.S. President asked her to decorate the Relief Society room for autumn, she had fun!  It turned out lovely, and she was satisfied.

One of our recent converts, who is only 27 years old, has been in the hospital for over a month.  She contracted spinal meningitis, which settled on her mitral valve in the heart.  That caused two strokes, a brain bleed and an access on the brain.  She has been SOOO
sick.  The doctors didn't know if she would pull through.  She finally is beginning to make some progress.  The heart valve is destroyed and will have to be replaced in a few weeks when she is well enough.  She has had blessings that promised her that she will recover.
Her faith and many others' has grown and played a vital part.  We keep praying for her and all her caregivers.  Her case has been a real challenge for them.

The Book of Mormon is true!  The priesthood is the power and authority of God!  Jesus Christ loves ALL people!  His church is restored in it's fulness today and is led by Him!
We have living prophets to lead us through Christ's direction!  We may not have the answers to all our questions, but Heavenly Father knows the answers.  In due time and through our obedience and faithfulness, He will reveal those answers to us.  We LOVE
Him and His Son!

And we love you!!

Good-bye Summer; Hello Fall - September 15, 2014

We are beginning to enjoy a bit cooler temperatures once in awhile--at least we are no longer in the 90s.  Whew!  However, we usually have 100% humidity, so daily thunderstorms are common.  The colors have barely started to show, so their peak will probably come in October.  We plan a train ride to Blue Ridge with some friends at that time.

In late August Laurel had a nuclear stress test after experiencing a couple of weird things with her heart.  Gratefully, everything looked good and she passed with flying colors.  She feels that shedding extra pounds will make a big difference, too.

We had a great time with the Boyds on their pontoon boat a couple of times.  We stopped at a restaurant for dinner, went to a movie once, and rode all over  Lake Chatuge.  They are wonderful friends whom we will greatly miss, along with so many others.

The FHA (Family Home Afternoon) groups are alive and well.  We are having some success in reactivation efforts through the FHAs.  Everyone needs to feel wanted, needed, and loved.  This has provided a non-threatening environment to help some less-actives begin their road to activity again.  Besides, we have a lot of fun!  Another great benefit has been inviting non-members to these meetings, which has resulted in being able to teach some of them.  We even have one progressing investigator from this!  His name is Charlie, and he
is doing very well.  He accepts everything we have taught him so far.  He can feel the Spirit in the messages.  We hope he can be baptized before our mission ends.

Laurel has finally reached the age to apply for Social Security benefits!  Guess that's a two-edged sword, but then every age is.  The Lord has richly blessed us so that we have always been able to provide for our family, and hopefully, for ourselves in our aging years.

At transfers last week Elder Gerig left us for Chat Valley near Chattanooga, TN.  We brought home with us Elder Milstead, who is from Alaska.  He and Elder Bean seem to be doing great together.  Elder Bean is from Fruit Heights, UT, the same ward Laurel's sister lived in for many years.

On Labor Day the senior couples of the mission gathered for an overnighter in Knoxville.  We all enjoyed dinner on Sunday evening and staying overnight at the mission home, breakfast the next morning, and lots of visiting.  Sunday evening we had a Tennessee mountain native speak to us on the true nature of Appalachians, their language, customs, and history.  It was fascinating and informative.  One of our favorite words we learned is
sigogglin.  It means out of line, not quite square, or such.

Asheville Stake Women's Conference was a genuine treat!  The theme was puzzles.  It addressed how our lives are like a puzzle with pieces gradually fitting together, sometimes one getting lost, but ultimately being guided, blessed, and finished by our Father in Heaven.
Original music, a modest fashion show, lunch, and wonderful sisters in the gospel combined to make a spiritual feast and awesome event.  We felt like our hearts had been massaged with love by the Spirit.

Saturday, Sept. 13, was not only Lynn's birthday but the Fall Branch Bonfire and picnic, so we combined the two!  It was great fun!  Laurel surprised Lynn with a BYU corn hole set that she had ordered for him.  Corn hole is a favorite game here.  We'll be bringing it home so everyone can play!

Friday, Sept. 12, we had Robbinsville FHA, Saturday was the Bonfire/Birthday, Sunday was a large group dinner at Boyd's, Monday (today) is dinner at Buzz Blazek's, Tuesday is Murphy FHA, Wednesday is Robbinsville lunch and teach Charlie, Thursday is District Meeting and take them all to lunch, Friday is home teach with Boyds and have fun----guess our theme is "A Party a Day Keeps the Devil Away!"  Uh, well, as long as we're doing the Lord's work.  ;)

Love all of you!  Remember, obedience is freedom!!

Sun, Sweat, and Southern Goodness -- August 17, 2014

Happy hot August ya'll!  We have sweltered and sweat in the 100% humidity, even though the temperatures have usually been in the 80s.  Gratefully, we don't get the extreme temps of the desert.  We feel sorry for those of you experiencing 100+F.

The last few days of July we helped pack and load a family we have been home teaching for the past year.  The widowed mom and four kids had so much to get rid of as well as to pack that we didn't see how we would ever get it done.  They moved from a roomy house to a single-wide trailer.  What a challenge!  Their bunny and four cats went along.  We hope they will be okay in their new location across the state.

July 30 we had Transfer Day in Knoxville, TN.  Our local Georgia boy, Elder Watson, left us and Elder Bean from Fruit Heights, UT joined us.  He actually came from Laurel's sister's ward.  If he had come to Murphy last autumn, we would have had Bean and Bacon.  LOL!

Our zone was divided, and we got new zone leaders.  We are now in the Asheville West Zone.  The zone leaders now attend every District meeting we have.  Since they live far away, all our meetings will be held in Franklin (an hour's drive for us).  Too bad.  The pizza buffet in Murphy and Blairsville, GA will not see our crowd anymore.  Nothing so tasty or affordable is in Franklin.

We haven't had success finding new people to teach, but we are focusing on the less-active members of the Branch.  We visit many each week, taking them Ensigns, having prayer and often serving in some way.  It is enriching and needed work.  Some respond well and some don't, but NO EFFORT IS EVER WASTED!

August 6 we joined several of our Food Pantry friends (mostly non-members) for an afternoon of pontoon boating on Lake Nantahala.  We brought our lunches for an on-board picnic.  At one point we beached for awhile to allow some of us to hike up to a waterfall.  It was slippery on the trail, and one fellow made a big splash in a mud hole.  We wondered if it wasn't a bear wallow.  Laurel enjoyed driving the boat for an hour as we cruised around the lake.  One more perk the young missionaries can't enjoy.  ;)

Our Avalon has been in the body shop for awhile for a few repairs, so we have been driving a smaller rental car.  It's okay, but we miss our own car.  The Elders miss our roomy, comfy back seat, too.

We really appreciate the great kindness of the members here.  They feed and feed and feed us!  Guess losing weight isn't in the plan until after we leave all this Southern cooking.  We keep exercising, so that will help, we hope.

Our health is good, our testimonies strong, our blessings innumerable.  We are in good shape!  We pray for all of you and miss all our family and friends, however, we love the people here, as well, and are grateful to be serving in North Carolina.

Love to all---
